Fascinating. I’m trying to think of parallels in Western culture, and nothing quite fits. There are the royal feasts of the Roman Empire and the traditions of the drinking toast, but nothing quite like this. Amy will probably have a better grasp on potential parallels. (One thinks of the eucharist tradition, but in theory at least it is a unifier eschewing class lines.)
